Creating a comfy, warm and inviting atmosphere inside the home during the colder months is essential. It will help you and your family survive the cold weather quite comfortably and since we are forced inside to hunker down for the next 4 months we might as well enjoy it. Here are a couple things that you can do to better enjoy the colder months.
Add a Throw Blanket
Add a throw blanket to any room you spend a lot of time in. Having a blanket near by while sitting down to watch a movie or read a book will discourage you from cranking the thermostat. This in turn can save on your heating bill while keeping you cozy. This is a simple additions to any room that doesn't cost very much and is well worth it. There is nothing better than snuggling up under a warm blanket, enjoying hot cocoa while watching a marathon of movies.
Swap Décor to Suit the Season
Light summer throw pillows and bright décor will look out of place during the fall and winter months. It is best to change these items out for deeper luxurious colours, textured items and seasonal décor. While you may not like the idea of using darker colours, doing so can actually change the entire room to a warmer and cozier atmosphere. Add a pop of colour by using a deeper tones or slightly muted colours. If you need more fall décor ideas check out subtle Decorations for Autumn.
Light a Fire
If you have a natural burning fire place make sure you have plenty of wood stored away for the winter. Use it on the coldest days or anytime you plan on spending the evening indoors. If you have a natural gas fireplace turn it on anytime you get a chill or need an extra boost of warmth. If you have neither of these try lighting a couple candles. While this wont warm you up it will create a soft flickering glow which is very cozy.
Word of the Day: Snow Garland
Snow that appears as long thick ropes draped on trees and other objects.
