I have completed this project once before with yarn which turned out lovely and you may have seen these is one of my previous posts. I have been wanting to use something different for wrapping the bottle so at first I thought about maybe using fabric. That didn't appeal to me so I decided it was time to see if there was anything hiding in my craft supplies. After digging around for a while I was able to fine an old ball of hemp. I used this back in high school to make hemp jewelry but no longer have the desire to use it for that. This was the perfect project to use up the last of that hemp.

Hemp

I thought this was a pretty good sized ball and had the intention of wrapping the entire surface. To begin I found a used wine bottle, cleaned it out but didn't bother removing the label since it would be covered anyway. I then grabbed my hot glue gun and plugged it in. I suppose you could use white glue but think it would be messy.

Supplies: Glue gun, wine bottle and hemp. That's it!

I like to start at the bottom but you really could start from either end. Any curved part of the bottle can be tricky as I find the yarn or hemp likes to slip and shift but as long as you glue along the way you should be fine. The most tedious part of this project is the start. You need to glue along the entire base and apply the hemp in small sections. Once the first couple rows have been completed it is then really easy to wind the hemp around the bottle. My technique is to twirl the bottle and let the hemp slip through my fingers instead of wrapping the hemp around the bottle.

Remember how I said I had the intention of covering the entire bottle...Well guess what. I ran out of hemp! I'm very lucky as I had just enough to cover the label. At first I was a little miffed as the original plan did not work out but in the end I like it, a lot. I love the mixture of textures between the rough hemp and shiny smooth bottle. It creates a very neat contrast which is striking. Sometimes a mistake or shortage of materials can make for a very beautiful outcome. Please let me know what you think and if you have completed a project like this.
