There is no better way to reduce the garbage that goes into landfills other than to reuse, repurpose, recycle and reclaim. Doing these four things will also reduce your ecological footprint as less land is being used to produce new items that you would otherwise buy.

There are a couple ways that you can reuse a piece of furniture or décor. Move the item to another room or even use it as a backup piece. For example, if you have old dining room chairs that you are no longer using you can store them for your next large dinner party or gathering. Or you may no longer have room or want to keep the item but that doesn't mean that someone else couldn't use it. Talk to friends and family to see if they want it or you could always donate it to your local charity or second hand store.

Repurposing an item means that you would use it for a completely different purpose than what it was intended for. This usually involves removing or adding a part, painting or upholstering so that it can perform for its new purpose. You can even combine multiple items together by disassembling and rebuilding to create a completely new piece.

Trying to figure out how you can repurpose an old item may be a little daunting but start by looking at what you have. Turn the piece over on all sides and look at each individual part separately. Draw it out in a number of different ways and sometimes you wont need to change a thing. Example: Use an old dining room table as a desk.

Some items cant always be recycled because of their composition but always check with local guidelines to see what can and how they should be recycled. Particular items like electronics or paints must go to independent companies. Some items will need to be thrown out but always recycle whatever you can. Its keeps waste out of the landfill and puts these materials towards new items which reduces the harvesting renewable of non renewable resources.

To reclaim something is to bring it back to a condition suitable for using. This also goes hand in hand with repurposing as most reclaimed items are used for something other than it was originally intended for. The most common reclaimed item is wood. More work is required for reclaiming wood or any item as it usually is old, dirty and parts may be broken. they require intensive refinishing and cleaning to make it safe for inside the home. Pieces may be left untouched to attain the original rustic look but these would be used as art or wall pieces as they would not be comfortable to walk or sit on.
