I have found a couple photos of doily shaped bowls online and have been wanting to recreate this craft. It looks like it would be incredibly hard to do but it is in fact very easy. It only took a total of 30 minutes from start to end plus drying time and I was left with a beautiful and intricate bowl.
- Store bought or handmade doilies
- Fabric stiffener
- Cling wrap
- Bowl or cup shapes or anything with a solid shape that gets wider at the top.
- Cardboard or paper.
Start by covering your bowl or cups in cling wrap. This will allow you to get the dried doily bowl off easily while keeping clean up to a minimum. I then placed each item on top of some cardboard to catch any drips.
Next, Saturate your doily with fabric stiffener. I just squished it around in a bowl with my fingers but didn't bother squeezing the excess out since I wanted a very sturdy bowl.
Once the doilies are completely saturated center it onto of your bowl and carefully stretch it out a bit. You might want to mould it until you are happy with the shape. Work with it until you are happy with the way it looks.
Let them dry overnight without disturbing them. Once they are completely dry carefully wiggle and peel the cling wrap until the bowl pops off. You will be left with a pretty doily bowl that you could fill with small items or leave empty.
