The first official day of summer is fast approaching with only one week to go. With it comes longer days with more sunlight and increasing temperatures which is perfect for enjoying a refreshing lemonade on the deck. I am especially excited for this summer as there are many fun things planned and I just cant stop thinking about it. I'm so excited that I have even been having dreams where I am constantly searching for a bottle of sunscreen. Its possible my subconscious is trying to tell me something!
Its essential that you prepare yourself for summer by applying sunscreen and wearing sun glasses to protect your health but there are some things you can also do to your home to get it ready for the warmer weather. Taking the time to do so will allow you to enjoy every last minute of beautiful sunshine before the snow flies again.
Dirty and dusty windows not only obscure your view but also restrict the amount of light that comes through the glass. When light is blocked it can create a dingy and slightly darker space which can be depressing and unmotivating. A squeegee is the best way to get a streak free shine but if a window is out of reach use a garden hose to rinse off most loose debris and wrap a cloth around a broom stick to reach any high windows.
Winter and even spring bedding can be too heavy for summer months and chances are that if its sweltering outside you probably don't sleep to well. If that's the case you may want to find a gel mattress topper and gel pillow that are designed to pull extra heat away from your body. Also consider buying a wicking and quick drying material that will keep perspiration to a minimum. A 250 thread count sheet made from cotton is a good choice as its light, breathable and can be used as a top cover as well.
Bring the Outdoors in With House Plants
You can create a seamless transition to the outdoors by placing a couple house plants inside your home. Place at least one small plant or vase of fresh cut flowers in every room to add a little life and colour to your entire house. This is an especially good idea if you live in a high rise condo or multilevel residence since you will not have a yard to retreat to.
Patio Dining Dishes
Invest in some acrylic, melamine or wood dishes that are used specifically for outdoor dining. They come in all sorts of bright colours perfect for summer and they wont break as easily if dropped. You can even use them as backup dishes for guests and they are great for camping.
Since they are only used for a short period during the year you may consider stepping outside your comfort zone and buy something that you wouldn't normally use.
